The Colour Sits in the Thread

Because the lace is sheer, the red is not delivered on a surface. It travels along the thread that draws the flowers, so it gathers and deepens wherever the pattern crosses over itself and thins out wherever the piece is pulled flat across a hip. One garment therefore carries several depths of the same colour at once. The shade is wine-toned rather than bright, which is the version that holds up in low light instead of turning orange under it.

At the centre of the design sits a small metal heart ring, and the two thin bands running in from each hip angle towards it, so the eye is sent to the middle of the piece rather than to its edges.
