Lace With Very Little Give

This is a 90% polyamide floral lace with slight stretch, and that is the number that matters most when you are deciding between two sizes. A knit forgives you; lace of this kind holds its own shape and leaves the straps to do the accommodating, so what you get is close to what the chart says. The range stops at four sizes, XS through L, and the guide covers all four in inches and in centimetres.

The lace is a scalloped floral and it is genuinely sheer, with no solid liner sitting behind it to make it opaque, which is the difference between a lace front and a lace-trimmed one. Two thin bands run in from each hip and angle towards one another to meet at the centre in a small metal heart ring. That ring is the only rigid component in an otherwise entirely soft garment. The rise is low and the back is a G-string, with nothing broad enough to gather anywhere on it.

Lace fails by snagging long before it fails by wearing out, so the whole job is keeping it away from hooks, zips, clasps and Velcro, in the wash and in the drawer alike. Wash it on its own by hand in cool water with a mild detergent and dry it flat; a machine, a dryer, an iron and a dry cleaner each do their own kind of damage.
