A Hood That Conceals Nothing

Almost every hood is bought in order to erase a face. This one works the other way around. Sheer floral lace lies straight on the skin and the face reads clearly through it, so it hides nothing at all and changes everything, which is a completely different effect from a hood that takes someone into the dark.

There are openings at both eyes and at the mouth, so seeing, speaking and breathing all continue as normal. The lace is fine enough that the line of a jaw and the colour of a mouth come through it, and the result reads as veiled rather than masked. In front of a camera it is unfairly good. It stands 28 cm (11.05 in) high and 20 cm (7.85 in) across, pulls on over the head with no zip and no lacing, sits close against the skull and gathers at the neck. One size, with the stretch of the fabric doing the fitting.

Because the lace is sheer and the mouth is open, breathing is never restricted. Keep it that way and never layer anything airtight on top of it. If it is going into a scene, settle on a signal before it goes on. If the gathering at the neck grips rather than rests, take it off. Hand wash cold with a mild detergent, keeping it clear of rings and nails since lace snags on both, then dry flat. No dryer and no iron. Store it flat or loosely rolled instead of folded so the lace never creases.
