The bottle does more than hold the solution. The carton sets out each part of it, and two of those parts exist purely to stop anything travelling the wrong way.

It works on water,
not on the muscle

A saline enema draws water in rather than stimulating the bowel directly, which is what the carton means by hydrates and softens. The one-way valve in the neck lets solution out and stops anything flowing back in, so the contents stay the contents. The shield over the tip keeps it clean right up to the moment the seal is broken.

One bottle is one use. There is no refilling it and no second attempt — the valve and the seal are built to work once.

  Follow the directions printed on the package exactly, and read them before the bottle is opened.

  No more than one bottle in 24 hours, and not for more than a few days in a row.

  Ask a doctor first if you are pregnant, have kidney disease or heart problems, are on a low-sodium diet, or have abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting.

  Stop and get medical advice if there is rectal bleeding, or no bowel movement after use. Either one can signal something that needs looking at.
